Purpose:
To advance the Jesuit tradition of service of faith and promotion of justice by collaborating with faculty and representatives from community service agencies to maintain, support and develop partnerships for the Arrupe Partnerships for Community-based Learning, a department of the Ignatian Center. In collaboration with community partners and faculty, the Program Director develops community placements whereby SCU students can learn from people whose life experiences and perspectives may be different from their own and bring that learning into dialogue with their concurrent coursework. This is a full-time, non-exempt, 11 month continuing appointment reporting to the Associate Director.
I. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Support community-based learning program in collaboration with other Program Director
- Recruit, support and supervise Arrupe interns.
- Serve as a resource to campus constituents for information about community partners and/or connecting with the community.
- Collaborate with the broader work of the Ignatian Center
II. Specific Responsibilities
- Support community-based learning program in collaboration with other Program Director.
- Recruit and support community partners, seeking mutually beneficial partnerships that respond to community and campus needs.
- Recruit and support SCU faculty from selected departments to integrate community-based learning into courses through student participation in the weekly engagement program or through project-based CBL development.
- Support/counsel students regarding placements and Arrupe Partnerships guidelines and troubleshoot problems.
- Support community partners in their role as co-educators.
- Support weekly engagement quarterly signup process and orientations.
- Participate in staff and team meetings and retreats.
- Supervise and support Arrupe interns in collaboration with other Program Director
- Annually recruit and hire 5 – 7 interns and match with appropriate community partners.
- Provide on-going support to community partners in their role as intern supervisors through regular individual communication and quarterly group meetings.
- Supervise and support Arrupe interns through regular individual communication and quarterly group meetings.
- Evaluate internships at the end of academic year in collaboration with community partners and interns.
- Organize annual celebration event with interns and community mentors.
- Serve as a resource to campus constituents and community partners.
- Direct community inquiries to other departments and/or Centers, when appropriate.
- Represent SCU to the outside community while educating the community about the mission of the Arrupe Partnerships.
- Be a resource to faculty who are interested in partnering with the community on special projects.
- Collaborate with the broader work of the Igatian Center
- Participate in All staff meetings and retreats
- Provide information/presentations about the Ignatian Center at various on-campus events.
- Support Ignatian Center sponsored events as needed.
- Seek opportunities for cross-department collaboration to strengthen the work of the Ignatian Center.
III. Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred.
- At least two years professional work experience in service-learning or community-based learning at the college level.
- Student experience in service-learning or community-based learning at college level.
- At least two years experience working with community groups, such as non-profits, advocacy organizations, social service agencies, schools, or parishes.
- Familiarity with Jesuit Higher Education, preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to develop projects from inception to completion.
- Excellent judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to be self-directed
- Flexibility, generosity, a desire to work in a fast-paced environment, and a sense of humor
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings and other nontraditional hours
- High intermediate level of conversational Spanish a plus.
- Valid US driver’s license
