Urban Studies Program
75% FTE, 3 Year Fixed Term Position (ending 8/31/15)
Urban Studies is an interdisciplinary, undergraduate program at Stanford that combines academic approaches with real-world experience to understand cities. The Service Learning Instructor / Coordinator (SLIC) will teach two collaborative community-based workshop classes per year, facilitate internship placements for Urban Studies students, and coordinate the Urban Studies summer fellowship program. Duties are as follows.
45% Teaching Community Engagement Courses:
Develop and teach two courses per year on mutually agreed topic(s) of importance to students in the Program on Urban Studies, such as urban planning and sustainability, urban design, or social services. The courses must include academic instruction in the subject material, as well as a community engagement component, such as group projects that students complete in cooperation with a local government or nonprofit agency. The courses should also include instruction in the principles of effective and ethical service learning, and provide opportunities for student reflection on their engagement with the community.
Responsibilities include:
• Identifying community partners;
• Developing and overseeing student – community partnerships;
• Creating the syllabus;
• Teaching class sessions;
• Evaluating student work.
20% Preparing and Placing Students in Internships
Work with students and faculty inside and outside of the classroom to prepare students for service internship experience and place students in internships.
Responsibilities include:
• Meeting with students individually and/or in groups for placement advisement, preparation and reflection;
• As necessary, providing support to Urban Studies courses with an internship component. This may include: advising students prior to their internship or practicum; coordinating placements; and playing an active part in class sessions that focus on internship concepts and skills;
• Developing course and workshop materials, preparing students to engage in a community setting and helping them to reflect on their experiences;
• Evaluating the appropriateness of students’ placements in relation to academic content of the course and organizational needs/ capacity;
• Evaluating student accomplishment of internship goals, and assigning grades (pass/fail) for those students enrolled for credit;
• Coordinating with staff at the Haas Center for Public Service to share best practices in service learning;
• Publicizing internship policies and opportunities through website, email, printed, and personal communications;
• Managing internship placement paperwork, internship blog and finances as appropriate.
20% Service Internships Development
Work with community-based organizations and government agencies to identify and clarify internship opportunities for Urban Studies students.
Responsibilities include:
• Working with community partners to identify internship opportunities with discrete, achievable goals that meet both student learning outcomes and community partner needs;
• Overseeing service-learning placements by phone, email and on-site visits to ensure that they are meeting goals of the service organization, course and Urban Studies;
• Responding to feedback and concerns about internship placements;
• Providing orientation for community supervisors on program requirements;
• Adapting and implementing evaluation and assessment of internships.
10% Coordinating Summer Fellowship Program
Organize the annual awarding of 3 to 5 summer fellowships.
Responsibilities include:
• Publicizing the fellowship opportunity, especially to Urban Studies majors and potential majors, through email, website, and personal communications;
• Evaluating fellowship applications, and reaching award decisions as part of a selection committee;
• Meeting with fellowship winners and ensuring that they are properly prepared for the experience; this may include leading workshops or referring them to appropriate academic opportunities on campus;
• Communicating with fellows throughout the summer electronically, by phone, and, for local placements, in person; maintaining and facilitating a blog or developing other means of group communication; coordinating with site supervisors and soliciting evaluations of student work;
• Arranging debriefing sessions, presentations, written reflections, and other opportunities as appropriate for post-summer reflection;
• Coordinating the logistics of applications, including managing web forms and paper documents as necessary.
5% Miscellaneous Duties within and beyond Urban Studies
• Participating in core functions of Urban Studies, such as staff meetings, quarterly lunches, etc;
• Acting as a liaison on issues of service learning to the Haas Center for Public Service, as well as to other campus units involved in service learning, in order to share resources and best practices;
• Writing occasional articles for the Urban Studies newsletter or website;
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications the SLIC must have:
• Expertise in an area of urban studies such as urban planning and sustainability, urban design, or community organizing, at a level that qualifies the SLIC to teach this subject to Stanford undergraduates;
• An advanced degree in a related field (MA, MS, PhD)
• Outstanding oral and written communication skills;
• Experience in working with diverse populations and demonstrated ability to create strong working relationships;
• Ability to teach in a variety of formal, informal, and one-on-one settings;
• Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
Highly desirable qualifications include:
• Knowledge of the principles of effective service learning;
• Experience teaching at the undergraduate level;
• Experience advising students;
• Experience working with governments and/or community organizations, particularly in the Bay Area.
