Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Vice Chancellor for Student Life. Reporting to the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor for Student Life provides visionary, creative, and energetic leadership for a division that includes housing and residence life, student involvement (leadership, social justice, graduate and undergraduate student government, student organizations), the campus center, student health services, counseling and psychological services, intramurals and recreational sports, and student rights, responsibilities, and conduct. The Vice Chancellor:
• Administers a Division of 72 full- and part-time staff;
• Oversees a division budget of $10M and is a key advocate for over 22,000 undergraduates and 8,200 graduate students;
• Participates with other leaders across campus to reach IUPUI’s vision as “one of the best urban universities, recognized locally, nationally, and internationally for its achievements;”
• Oversees division strategic planning and assessment, communications, websites, budget preparation and monitoring, and fund raising;
• Develops strong partnerships with academic affairs and the surrounding community in support of co-curricular programs and activities;
• Demonstrates a strong student-centered approach with a focus on student success, diversity, and civic engagement; and
• Applies best practices of the profession.

Situated on a 509-acre campus in downtown Indianapolis, IUPUI is a unique and highly successful forty-year old partnership between Indiana University and Purdue University. Student Life requires a leader who can work within an urban institution where maximizing the involvement of non-traditional and first-generation undergraduates as well as graduate and graduate professional students in the life of the campus is a particular goal; develop and present case statements for new housing and other facilities in support of student involvement; raise external funds for selected Student Life initiatives; and work effectively within a university system and a philosophy of shared governance. The Vice Chancellor will embrace a diversity of thought, values, and approach that comes from differences in race, age, gender, sexual orientation, and other personal dimensions to enhance a full learning environment for students, staff, and faculty.

The successful candidate will:
• Have a track record of accomplishments in leadership, administration, working effectively with a variety of stakeholders including faculty;
• Show strong supervisory and leadership skills in progressively more responsible positions with the ability to nurture an atmosphere of collegiality, inclusiveness, shared inquiry, shared responsibility, and collective accomplishment;
• Demonstrate strong collaboration, communication, and team-building skills and a knowledge of urban institutions;
• Show evidence of being a student-centered professional who has enhanced the quality of student learning and development outcomes in an urban setting and who is knowledgeable about best practices in the profession, critical student issues, and higher education trends;
• Use research and assessment tools for evidence-based decision-making and evaluation;
• Demonstrate evidence of multicultural competence and successful leadership in working with diverse undergraduate and graduate student populations;
• Demonstrate evidence of recruiting and supporting a diverse staff;
• Demonstrate active participation and leadership in local, regional, and national professional organizations; and
• Demonstrate knowledge of student development theory and best practices.

The successful candidate should possess a minimum of seven years of increasing responsibility and leadership experience in student affairs at the level of Director, Dean of Students, or above at comparable institutions. A Doctorate in Higher Education or a related field is required. Eligible candidates may qualify for an academic appointment.
