Leticia Contreras, a third year student at Hampshire College, is a student and community leader who has engaged and inspired a wide circle of her peers to address public health issues through community and youth empowerment. As a lead organizer with Hampshire’s Civil Liberties and Public Policy program, and in the Chicano and Black community in Texas where she was raised, Leticia has actively worked to foster youth activism on cultural and political issues, using arts as a vehicle for education and social change.

I have always had a drive to serve others and work for the common good. But I never fully realized that I could go beyond volunteerism--that my opinion and hard work could influence policy decisions. My views changed when I sat in the office of one of my legislators in Washington, DC.
