Although she is only in her junior year, Yamila Martinez has already made a significant mark on both our university and our community. Her commitment to equity, justice, and fairness runs deep and is exhibited in her involvement in DREAMERS through organizing and working for the passage of the Dream Act, lobbying and working for in-state tuition for the children of undocumented workers, the FACE movement, and the Mestizo Arts and Activism. Yamila is an honors student and will graduate with the Honors degree. During her time in the Honors College she has emerged as a leader and has been heavily involved in the Social Justice Scholars, the Honors Think Tank on Social Change and has presented her participatory research findings at national conferences.

Yamila Martinez, University of Utah, Utah
I have always had a drive to serve others and work for the common good. But I never fully realized that I could go beyond volunteerism--that my opinion and hard work could influence policy decisions. My views changed when I sat in the office of one of my legislators in Washington, DC.
