Beau Ohlgren, Warren Wilson College

Beau Ohlgren serves directly, coordinates programs, and raises funds. While at Warren Wilso,n he has led the Tranzmission Prison Project, providingb ooks and pen pals pairing student allies with incarcerated individuals for support. Connecting with LGBT prisoners inspired Beau to advocate and educate about inequalities and oppression in the prison system. His service extends to insulating homes for low income families and mentoring in  Big Brothers, Big Sisters. Internationally he was involved in de-mining in Cambodia and environmental work in Mexico. Following the completion of his degree with a major in environmental studies, his plans include international service work and law school with a focus on environmental policy.

I have always had a drive to serve others and work for the common good. But I never fully realized that I could go beyond volunteerism--that my opinion and hard work could influence policy decisions. My views changed when I sat in the office of one of my legislators in Washington, DC."
