Kay Schaffer, a Bard College junior, has brought together a wide-range of Bard students to participate in the Nicaragua Education Initiative, which focuses on specific educational projects that empower youth and community members in the rural town of Chacraseca, Nicaragua. Ms. Schaffer is steward for this long-standing, student-led initiative, started in response to the devastation brought by Hurricane Mitch. Ms. Schaffer organizes and fundraises with student volunteers for this three-week, January program. Ms. Schaffer is pursuing a major in human rights, and the Nicaragua Educational Initiative combines her commitment to human rights and a development of cultural exchange and understanding. Her adept leadership, cultural sensitivity and academic talents will be assets in the field after graduation.

Kay Schaffer, Bard College
I have always had a drive to serve others and work for the common good. But I never fully realized that I could go beyond volunteerism--that my opinion and hard work could influence policy decisions. My views changed when I sat in the office of one of my legislators in Washington, DC.
-Amanda Coffin, University of Maine at Farmington, Campus Compact student leader
