Korey Mercer, North Carolina Central University

Korey Mercer, a senior at North Carolina Central University is a true community organizer. In addition to having earned the most community service hours as a student at NCCU, he inspires his peers on campus to take advantage of community service opportunities and assisting those less fortunate. In his time at NCCU, he has organized events such as the Register Eagles to Vote drive, Eagles Build Habitat Humanity Homes, and Durham County blood drives. The motto at NCCU is “Truth and Service” and Korey optimizes this by his actions, scholarship, and deeds.

I have always had a drive to serve others and work for the common good. But I never fully realized that I could go beyond volunteerism--that my opinion and hard work could influence policy decisions. My views changed when I sat in the office of one of my legislators in Washington, DC."
