Sarah Lewan, Saginaw Valley State University

Sarah Lewan, a junior at Saginaw Valley State University, is striving to bring awareness to an issue affecting people across the globe. Sarah created an organization called Project Sunset out of her residence hall room during her freshman year to help raise money and awareness of malaria’s effects in Africa. Project Sunset has raised money for approximately 350 nets to protect families in Gabon, Africa, since 2011. Sarah has taken her community engagement beyond the campus and local community and is now working to spread her mission across the United States through a non-profit organization called E4 Project. Sarah saw a need greater than one she could fill by herself and reached out to her campus community to inspire other students to help those they might never meet in person.

Thanks to Campus Compact for all that you have done over the years to nurture the campus service and service-learning movement. When we started at St. A's 15 years ago there was a feeling among some campuses that we were seeing higher education's latest 'flash in the pan.' Instead it was the beginning of a revolution of ideas and relationships, and you guys have been fueling us all the way."
