As an incoming Freshman who had just taken an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) class, Anna Uehara quickly joined SERV, the student run emergency medical service group on campus. After passing the scenario tests to become an On Campus Responder, Anna joined the rest of the members in taking shifts throughout the week and has been active as a responder since. As a native of Japan, Anna has recently been involved in working with students, staff and community members to set up an emergency relief fund through the American Red Cross, developing panel presentations on Japan’s response to the crisis, and organizing benefits for relief efforts.

Anna Uehara, Bucknell University, Pennsylvania
The Swearer Award has provided me with such an incredible venue for advocacy. At Penn, I've had the chance to speak to faculty, students, and alumni who are interested more than ever in supporting the civic mission of higher education.
