Gretchen Timer, Saint Joseph’s University, Pennsylvania

Gretchen Timer, a junior at Saint Joseph’s University, is engaged locally, nationally, and globally in service and justice work.  Gretchen has been a service site coordinator with Saint Joseph’s University Weekly Service program for the past two years.  Gretchen serves as a liaison between Saint Joseph’s University volunteers and Philadelphia community partner organizations and facilitates ongoing social justice reflection opportunities for her volunteers.  Gretchen has served in the Appalachian region and in Duran, Ecuador. She educates and inspires action in her peers about the social injustices facing people of these regions both before and after her service.

The Swearer Award has provided me with such an incredible venue for advocacy. At Penn, I've had the chance to speak to faculty, students, and alumni who are interested more than ever in supporting the civic mission of higher education."

-Mei Elansary, University of Pennsylvania, recipient of Campus Compact's Swearer Student Humanitarian Award
