Brown University Example Campus Vote Initiative Program

Providence, Rhode Island

Noting that in the past universities have been content to assign the task of registering voters to undergraduate groups such as the College Democrats or College Republicans, Brown University announced the development of a university policy on participatory citizenship in the electoral arena. Then-interim President Sheila Blumstein wrote to all pre-freshman and all undergraduates about their civic responsibility as voters, and the university offered information about how to register in all 50 states on its web site to help students register in their home state. In addition, the university pledged to provide students with both Rhode Island and national voter registration forms.

Thanks to Campus Compact for all that you have done over the years to nurture the campus service and service-learning movement. When we started at St. A's 15 years ago there was a feeling among some campuses that we were seeing higher education's latest 'flash in the pan.' Instead it was the beginning of a revolution of ideas and relationships, and you guys have been fueling us all the way."
