Portland State University — Getting out the vote

Portland State University

Portland, Oregon

The Associated Students of PSU, OSPIRG, the Building Votes program of the Bus Project, and numerous other student organizations (called the Oregon Student Vote Coalition) have set a goal of getting at least 85% of the campus registered to vote. They calculate that if they register 1/3 of the campus through their effort, the remaining students will likely register to vote on their own, and 15% will probably not register because they are not citizens. The students are registering voters in classrooms, at orientations, through tabling, and in the dorms. They are also promoting the nonpartisan voter registration site www.StudentVote.org, and working with the administration to get the StudentVote widget up on high-traffic university sites. After the registration deadline, the Coalition will focus on making as many voting reminders as possible through many of the same person-to-person techniques as for voter registration, as well as text messaging and phone banking.

Thanks to Campus Compact for all that you have done over the years to nurture the campus service and service-learning movement. When we started at St. A's 15 years ago there was a feeling among some campuses that we were seeing higher education's latest 'flash in the pan.' Instead it was the beginning of a revolution of ideas and relationships, and you guys have been fueling us all the way."
