Civic Engagement Initiatives

Embedding engagement throughout higher education institutions is at the heart of Campus Compact's work. Under this broad category are research and other initiatives created to help campuses develop effective service, service-learning, and civic engagement programs.

  • Consulting Corps
    Campus Compact's newly expanded Consulting Corps includes individual leaders whose valuable knowledge and diverse perspectives can inform efforts to deepen civic and community engagement in higher education.

  • Carnegie Community Engagement Classification
    Drawing its criteria heavily from Campus Compact's Indicators of Engagement Project, this Carnegie classification reaffirms institutional commitment to deepen the practice of service and to further strengthen bonds between campus and community.

  • Community Partnerships
    Recent research into campus-community partnerships in 23 communities across the United States, with ways to strengthen partnerships that advance community priorities while deepening the civic knowledge, skills, and values of students.

  • Engaged Scholars
    Our engaged scholars collaborate with Campus Compact's national and state offices to develop and share valuable resources for the field.

    Earn, Learn, and Serve: Getting the Most from Community Service Federal Work-Study

  • History, Civics and Service
    Campus Compact is undertaking an initiative aimed at deepening the pedagogical impact of civic learning through the design of deliberate connections between historical and civic knowledge and community service experience. Includes a Toolkit with resources, projects, syllabi and more.

  • Indicators of Engagement
    This multiyear research project, designed to help campuses deepen their civic and community engagement work, has identified models and successful practices among two-year colleges, minority-serving institutions, and comprehensive universities.

  • Presidents' Declaration on the Civic Responsibility of Higher Education
    The Presidents' Declaration has been signed by hundreds Campus Compact member presidents and chancellors.

  • Program Models
    Our searchable database of hundreds of program models from campuses across the spectrum of higher education, indexed by type of program.

  • Raise Your Voice - Student Action for Change
    Campus Compact, with support from The Pew Charitable Trusts, is undertaking a student civic campaign calling upon the talents and energies of students to participate in the renewal of American democracy. Go to this site for resource guides, a database of national student organizations and initiatives, job, internship, fellowship and scholarship resources, and much more.

    A landmark report and other information from a network of research universities committed to engaged scholarship, coordinated by Campus Compact.

  • Visioning Essays
    Provocative essays from Campus Compact member presidents, faculty, chief academic officers, community service staff, and students, as well as community partners and funders, proposing priorities and next steps for community engagement across the nation.

  • Campus Voting Initiative
    Campus Compact's Campus Voting Initiative offers voter education and registration information, ideas with connecting service with voting activity, and voting links, among other information.
