Brief Biography:
Carrie Williams Howe has been practicing and studying service-learning since 2002 through scholarship, professional positions, and university teaching. A graduate of the University of Vermont Master's program in Higher Education and Student Affairs, Carrie's areas of expertise include curriculum development, reflection, international service-learning, experiential education, and strategic planning for community engagement. Well-versed in service-learning theory and implementation, Carrie has extensive experience in offering training on this topic to a wide variety of audiences — from faculty members, to student teaching assistants, to K-12 educators. She also teaches service-learning courses herself (in nonprofit theory and civic leadership) and leads international service-learning workshops. Carrie works full-time at the University of Vermont as the Associate Director of Community-University Partnerships and Service-Learning. In this position, she works closely with faculty and students in developing community engagement curriculum, institutionalizing service-learning, and fostering reciprocal community partnerships; she is also a campus leader in designing international service-learning experiences. In addition to her full-time work, Carrie has presented at multiple service-learning conferences and consults regularly with higher education institutions, nonprofit organizations, and other community engagement-related initiatives, including the Northern New England Campus Compact Engaged Department Initiative.

I have always had a drive to serve others and work for the common good. But I never fully realized that I could go beyond volunteerism--that my opinion and hard work could influence policy decisions. My views changed when I sat in the office of one of my legislators in Washington, DC.
