Brief Biography:
I initially became interested in campus/community partnerships as the director of a large community-based child care program. We formed a partnership with a small liberal arts college to have work-study students in the program. We quickly found that developing a weekly seminar, linking with their psychology professor, and providing better support and training led to better outcomes for both the students and the children in our care. Over the years my role changed to director of a large family support program, Deputy Secretary of Vermont's huge Agency of Human Services, Research Professor at our state University, and Coordinator of our local community development/community organizing group. In each of those settings my gratitude for campus/community partnerships has increased, as, hopefully, has my skill in facilitating that work for the benefit of all. My current main areas of interest and exploration are: poverty; housing and homelessness, social policy, early childhood and family support, health care reform, immigration and land use, supports for elders and persons with disabilities, and the role of civic engagement in community development. My family and I raise sheep in rural Vermont. Being a Quaker is an important part of my social action orientation. My greatest joy is helping students of all ages to discover the strength of their own spiritual foundations in the social change work they hope to accomplish.
