Brief Biography:
Professor White is a tenured faculty member at the University of Southern Maine: Lewiston-Auburn, and is the Program Coordinator of the Collaborative Learning And School Success (CLASS) professional development school (PDS) model which is committed to the concept of the simultaneous renewal teacher education program. Dr. White has completed research and presented workshops on a variety of topics including: Service Learning, effective teaching-learning, and issues related to educational reform. Before accepting university appointments to work in undergraduate and graduate teacher education, he was an early childhood/elementary classroom educator and building principal with specializations in Science Education and pre-K-16 educational reform. In 2004 Dr. White received a 'Sentiment of Appreciation' from the Maine State Legislature, the University Faculty Award for Service from the USM Faculty Senate, as well as the Donald Harward Faculty Award for Service Learning Excellence from Maine Campus Compact. Dr. White is the President of the Board of Trustees of the KIDS Consortium (www.kidsconsortium.org), a nationally recognized leader in the service-learning movement. KIDS Consortium has touched more than a quarter-million students to date; it assists teachers, administrators and community partners as they work with K-12 students to identify, research and address real community challenges. Students are involved in powerful learning experiences, forge stronger ties to their communities, and gain the skills and confidence they need to become engaged citizens.
