National Service Hill Day
September 14, 2006
As Senator Tom Harkin remarked during the morning program of National Service Hill Day on September 14 in Washington, DC, the national service field certainly “showed up” in force. In total, 134 people from 78 organizations met with 112 congressional offices — double last year’s participation!
Meeting discussions focused on adopting the Senate’s recommended FY07 funding levels for national service programs and maintaining the AmeriCorps Education Award at $4,725, which the House recommended lowering to $4,050 by linking its value to Pell Grants.
Led by the National Service Congressional Caucus, members of the House were asked to sign a Dear Colleague letter in support of the higher Senate-recommended funding levels.
Here are the next steps:
- Please contact your House member and ask that they sign-on to the Dear Colleague letter
(36KB) in the next week. Your voice and that of your Congressperson can provide thousands of citizens the opportunity to serve. Forty-three House members signed the last Caucus letter in March. We need to help double the list of current list of signatures. To date, 18 members have signed in support of national service. - October presents another opportunity to engage your legislators by inviting them to visit your program during the congressional recess. The Voices for National Service web site contains a guide to inviting and hosting your Members of Congress and other legislators. If you need further assistance in identifying or contacting your legislators please contact Voices at 202-742-7374 or me at 401.867.3936 and we would be glad to help. There is no better way to communicate the impact of service than by inviting your legislators to serve alongside you.
Let’s grow national service and expand opportunities for Americans to serve. Thank you for your phone calls and letters!
