Deval Patrick proposed the creation of a Commonwealth Corps

In his first policy announcement since his election in November 2006, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick proposed the creation of a Commonwealth Corps, comprising volunteers who will dedicate one year of service to improve local communities. The Patrick administration filed the proposed Commonwealth Corps legislation on February 9, 2007.

Campus Compact president Maureen F. Curley helped draft the legislation, and Massachusetts Campus Compact (MACC) will play an important role in guiding the Corps. MACC will serve on a proposed community service-learning advisory council, and will also work with the Massachusetts Service Alliance to develop criteria for accreditation of service sites. Read the full text of the legislation, including MACC’s role, on mass.gov.

Thanks to Campus Compact for all that you have done over the years to nurture the campus service and service-learning movement. When we started at St. A's 15 years ago there was a feeling among some campuses that we were seeing higher education's latest 'flash in the pan.' Instead it was the beginning of a revolution of ideas and relationships, and you guys have been fueling us all the way."
