New Federal Budget for 2007

New Federal Budget for 2007

Last week, the House passed its version of a continuing resolution to extend funding at approximately the same levels from 2006 to 2007. This bill will now go to the Senate and should be taken up in the coming weeks.

New Federal Budget for 2008

The President’s proposed Budget was made public today and is available now online. Also available are highlights of the budget for the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Learn & Serve America was cut further to $32.1 million (down from 43 in 2005, and 37.1 in 2006 and 2007) AmeriCorps was trimmed approximately 4%. Also, the President proposes to shift AmeriCorps from a 2 year allocation to a 1 year allocation, which will mean losing any unallocated funds after one year. We will be looking through the proposed budget carefully in the coming days and contacting key states for targeted activities.

Senator Kennedy

We have been asked by Senator Kennedy’s staff to comment on a draft bill assist with recruitment and training for recent college graduates so that they might become K-12 teachers. This bill would be part of reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind legislation that is due to be reauthorized this year. Hearings will begin Thursday, February 8.
We will keep you posted on proposed legislation as it winds its way to the floor.

I have always had a drive to serve others and work for the common good. But I never fully realized that I could go beyond volunteerism--that my opinion and hard work could influence policy decisions. My views changed when I sat in the office of one of my legislators in Washington, DC."
