Ashly Garner of Fond du Lac fosters in college students the old Irish adage: “You get what you give.”

As this year’s AmeriCorps service learning coordinator for Fond du Lac’s three colleges, she’s become adept at weaving together community opportunities that benefit both the giver and the recipient…

…Garner is one of two service learning coordinators working in Fond du Lac and hosted by the Volunteer Center. Starting Nov. 13 Nick Willinski will be creating projects for students in Grades K-12.

Both are employed through VISTA from AmeriCorps and the Wisconsin Campus Compact, a national association tasked with building civic engagement into campus and academic life.

Before I started working in community service-learning, I was one of those people who didn't have much of a social conscience. Now all of that has changed, and I say, 'Put me in the trenches to do the real work to make a difference.'"
