Irving Schneider: At Johnson & Wales, ‘Generation U’ is about helping youth

Whether it is the “Me Generation,” the “Millennials,” “Generation X,” “Y” and now even “Z” — college students have been tagged with labels for decades. With the ever-present ear buds from their iPods cranked up high, texting on their cell phones, and hours spent visiting Facebook pages, you may think these young adults’ waking hours are all about them and their friends.

Here’s a snapshot to give you another impression of today’s college student:

Johnson & Wales University Providence Campus enrollment: 10,148. Students engaged in community service during 2009: 4,429.

Their 94,185 hours of community service: Priceless…
