Charitable Gift Fund

(9/11/2008)

— The Fidelity® Charitable Gift Fundâ„  (the “Gift Fund”) and Campus Compact® announced today they have jointly selected 10 academic institutions from across the country to participate in the second year of the Students4Givingâ„  program, a unique initiative designed to inspire philanthropic education on college campuses.

The Gift Fund and Campus Compact launched the program last year with five participating schools. The 10 new academic institutions this year are: The George Washington University, in Washington, D.C.; Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass.; Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo.; Providence College in Providence, R.I.; Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan.; the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, N.C.; the State University of New York at Binghamton, N.Y.; Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich.; Wheelock College in Boston, Mass., and Northeastern University in Boston, Mass.

Financed by Fidelity, Students4Giving provides students at the 10 selected academic institutions with oversight of a $15,000 donor-advised fund Giving Account® which will be managed by the students participating in their respective 2009 winter/spring non-profit and philanthropy courses.

The students will learn about charitable giving and will be involved in a variety of activities to teach them how to meet community needs by researching local issues, evaluating IRS-qualified 501(c)(3) public charities and determining which causes and non-profits to support through Gift Fund grants.

“We are pleased and gratified with the results of the pilot year of Students4Giving and are happy to be able to expand the program and build on its success by including 10 additional schools,” said Sarah C. Libbey, president of the Gift Fund. “Managing actual charitable assets provides the students with a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities that exist within the non-profit world. The program demonstrates to students how they can make a significant societal contribution, with tangible results. Our hope is that Students4Giving will provide the participating students with the inspiration and skills necessary to become the next generation of philanthropic leaders.”

“Last year’s pilot program was a huge success,” said Campus Compact president Maureen F. Curley. “Students4Giving offers college students and their academic institutions a hands-on means of fulfilling their commitment to bettering their communities. This year’s expanded program will have an even larger impact.”

Last year, five academic institutions participated in the pilot program: Boston University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, California State University at Fresno, Portland Community College in Oregon and Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington. Through the Gift Fund’s Giving Account, student-run programs at these academic institutions gave tens of thousands of dollars to a variety of local charities including a Boys and Girls Club in California, a community hot meals program in Oregon and a mobile classroom reading program in North Carolina.

Many participating students reported they learned that philanthropy isn’t just about writing a check but involves identifying a problem, creating a budget, raising funds and ultimately meeting a need. Some of last year’s participants are now considering careers in philanthropy and a number of their schools are considering adding more philanthropic course work.

Cynthia Killingsworth, an accounting instructor at Portland Community College, said many of her 70 students last year felt empowered by their philanthropic work. “Many wanted to continue to stay involved with the nonprofit organizations they supported through their classroom experience,” she said.

This program year, the Gift Fund and Campus Compact will again provide the selected schools with access to charitable planning consultants, as well as guidance and education on charitable giving issues, civic volunteerism and giving through a donor-advised fund.

I have always had a drive to serve others and work for the common good. But I never fully realized that I could go beyond volunteerism--that my opinion and hard work could influence policy decisions. My views changed when I sat in the office of one of my legislators in Washington, DC."
