Databases on West Philadelphia

University of Pennsylvania - PA, Pennsylvania

Residents of West Philadelphia have access to a store of information about their community, thanks to the internet and the University of Pennsylvania s computer technology. The university maintains five vast databases of information on and about West Philadelphia, all of which can be accessed via internet. One database provides the history of the neighborhood, while another offers technical assistance for neighborhood organizations. A vast resource database offers everything from population statistics and crime rates to building codes and health-related phone numbers. University members, Philadelphia organizations, and K-12 teachers and students, contribute to the databases.

I consider Campus Compact to be one of the most enlightened and farsighted ventures that American colleges and universities have undertaken.... It provides evidence that there are, in the world of higher education, people more than willing to pitch in, people of vision and commitment."

-John Gardner, former U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare
