Environmentally-sound architecture

Oberlin College - OH, Ohio

When it was time to construct a new building to house the environmental studies program at Oberlin College, the department chair decided it should reflect the socially-responsible theme of the department. As a result, the building is being planned to serve as a model of environmental responsibility and efficiency. Construction, begun in August 1998, has been painstakingly planned to protect and enhance the environment however possible. The building is being constructed primarily using materials that are grown or manufactured sustainably. Once completed, the innovative environmentally-sound building will discharge no wastewater and generate more electricity than it will use.
