Collaboration with low-income housing residents: Chester-Swarthmore Community Coalition

Swarthmore College - PA, Pennsylvania

The Chester-Swarthmore Community Coalition models community-initiated collaboration between the college and its surrounding community. Six Swarthmore College faculty and fifty students volunteer at one of the low-income housing development in the Chester neighborhood. A variety of youth projects undertaken at the sites include tutoring and writing classes for elementary school children, a non-violence training program for middle school children and a boys choir. Through these and other projects, the faculty and students have developed a relationship with families at the housing developments that now spans six years.

Our commitment is grounded in the notion that higher education's purpose is inextricably linked to the public good. That at its best higher education creates an opportunity to develop global citizen leaders. Pennsylvania Campus Compact is a vibrant organization that offers resources and support to campuses who share this commitment."
