Expanding Teacher Education Through Service Learning (a SLATE Subgrantee Institution)

Hampton University - VA, Virginia

Service-learning at Hampton University is an essential aspect of the teaching-learning process for it affords students the opportunity to blend curriculum objectives with community service to meet academic goals. Imbued with the spirit of service learning, the Department of Education currently launched its latest service-learning partnerships with Head Start programs located in three adjacent cities in Virginia. Approximately 25 students capture opportunities to meet needs identified by 15 Head Start teachers including providing children with developmentally appropriate activities to accentuate literacy and gross motor skills. Special activities for children include storytelling using multimedia, and book talks that invite conversation, wonder, play, and creativity. Other special service include fostering tutorial and mentoring service for children and Head Start teachers enrolled in university classes.

[Campus Compact's] student symposia have been very valuable to our student leaders. These conferences have been a great way to network with other schools and share ideas."
