The Parent Advocacy Project, a partnership between North Flint high schools and the University of Michigan at Flint, is an example of an effort to empower parents in response to studies showing the importance of parental involvement in school success. The partnership surveyed parents, then developed a six-week training seminar. In the first class, 16 parents learned ways to access school systems and understand processes such as school retention, discipline, and standardized testing. The final test in the seminar comes when participants design the training session for the next class of parents.
