West Philadelphia Improvement Corps

West Philadelphia Schools and the University of Pennsylvania - PA, Pennsylvania

In West Philadelphia, the University of Pennsylvania has been working with West Philadelphia High School and the Turner Middle School in a collaborative partnership to develop “”youth Corps.”" They hope to develop skills in students and teenagers to help revitalize neighborhoods in West Philadelphia. This effort is funded by grants from United Parcel Service Foundation, the U.S. Department of Labor, and others. They have been able to develop a program collaboratively that involves social health programs, a variety of after school programs, adult classes, drug prevention programs, and volunteer programs. In addition, curriculum is integrated with special projects; job training through hospitals, newspapers, and medical centers; and community outreach to a variety of schools and senior centers. This collaborative program has students running extracurricular programs, helping with health screening, and working with youth athletics (Prager, 1993).
