Substance abuse education: Talkin About It

University of Washington - WA, Washington

As part of a campus-wide effort to raise awareness of substance abuse, students at the University of Washington put together a series of campus performances and events. In the play, Talkin About It, students portray the story of a college student confronted by problems associated with substance abuse. Following each performance, audience questions are fielded by a student with training in substance abuse issues. Students also organize a Substance Awareness Week each year, which includes a number of awareness-raising events. Students provide information through a brochure on substance abuse issues and a small health fair.

From Service Matters 1998: Engaging Higher Education In the Renewal of America s Communities and American Democracy

Illinois Campus Compact is a tremendous resource for connecting with people in (and outside of) the state. Having their office located on our campus has been an extra benefit for those of us working on service-learning and civic engagement projects."
