Career Development Office: promoting a values-based approach to career and life planning

Neumann College - PA, Pennsylvania
President: ROSALIE MIRENDA

Last year the Career Development Office had an Academically-Based Service Coordinator position funded through the Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development. This position was half-time for one school year. The Coordinator assisted the Coordinator of Experiential Education Programs (includes Service-Learning) to educate faculty in service-learning pedagogy and increased opportunities for community based learning.

The mission of the Office is to promote a values-based approach to career and life planning with opportunities for career exploration through service-learning, cooperative education and internships. The mission of the office reflects the college mission of using knowledge in the service of others and staff members are very much in harmony with this approach. The Career Development Office provides information on public and non-profit career choices and community- based organizations are invited to Career Fairs and on-campus recruiting. Neumann College is part of the Delaware Valley Education Consortium which sponsors the annual Greater Philadelphia Teacher Job Fair to provide students and alumni with the opportunity to meet with representatives of local and national school districts for teaching positions. Students have had cooperative education and internship experiences in a variety of non-profit organizations. Many have taken full time positions with educational, health care and other non-profit organizations. The Director has also developed a course on Socially Responsible Career Planning to be offered in the future.

Thanks to Campus Compact for all that you have done over the years to nurture the campus service and service-learning movement. When we started at St. A's 15 years ago there was a feeling among some campuses that we were seeing higher education's latest 'flash in the pan.' Instead it was the beginning of a revolution of ideas and relationships, and you guys have been fueling us all the way."
