College of the Canyons proposes to provide development grants and training for five faculty members with the goal of increasing the number of faculty who integrate service learning within existing courses and programs. The five courses will expose approximately 160 students per semester to service-learning opportunities. The increase in service-learning opportunities for students will increase the number of placements in community agencies in the Santa Clarita Valley. Also, the five faculty development grants and training will increase the number of faculty who intergrate service-learning from one to six, a 500 percent increase. A volunteer, community service and service-learning center will be established by the college. It is hoped that they will be able to move from a level I institution to at least a Level II institution by the end of the three-year effort.
