Stanford’s most visible commitment to community and public service is the Haas Center for Public Service. It offers students the opportunity to acquire service experience in local, regional, national and international contexts. The Center maintains and coordinates vounteer, internship, and community-research opportunities in the bay area for undergraduate and graduate students. Programs include assisting with service learning courses across the curiculum, implementing a student development program that gives every student the chance to build leadership skills and knowledge of the best practices of service, and collaborates with local communities to help meet immediate needs through direct service.

The experience of interacting with some of the [homeless] people on the streets was an eye-opener. You leave those types of experiences with a mix of emotions--hope, disgust, love, grief--but I always leave motivated to do more.
