Mission statement: defining the community to be served

Richard Stockton College - NJ, New Jersey

Many schools mission statements refer generally to the idea of community. In contrast, the mission statement at Stockton College explicitly defines the community it wishes to serve, stating that through research and community service, we actively seek to take advantage of and to improve the unique physical and human environment in which the college is located. The mission goes on to highlight Stockton s unique circumstances: located twelve miles north of Atlantic City, the college has always devoted much of its energy to providing education tailored to the needs of the local ex-casino population. More than just abstract ideas, this mission creates a distinct connection between Stockton and the surrounding community.
