Service Learning at Alverno

Alverno College - WI, Wisconsin

Internship program: All Weekday and many Weekend students are required to perform one or two internships.? Each internship is linked with the student s major or support area of study. Students serve a wide variety of clients, including business, non-profit organizations, and health and social service agencies. Some internship sites have been: The Milwaukee Health Department, Wisconsin Electric Power Company, Madison Street Clinic, and the Milwaukee Brewers.

Courses: Many courses in a wide variety of disciplines require students to perform service in order to develop greater understanding of the subjects and their professional application. Some courses in which students provide service are: Marketing Research, Computerizing the Organization, and Advanced Nursing Theory and Practice.

Ethic of Service: Service is stressed in a variety of ways at Alverno. For example, service is one criterion used to identity students who graduate with honors. Also, student organizations and clubs are encouraged to include community service as part of their regular activities.

I want to thank Washington Campus Compact for working so hard throughout our state to support and expand service learning. Just in the last three years, you've helped to mobilize over 20,000 college and university students to serve in their communities."

-U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA)
