Testing through service: teaching science to sixth graders

Millikin University - IL, Illinois
President: Thomas F. Flynn

It is said that the best test of whether someone has learned something is whether they can teach it. Marianne Robertson, professor of biology at Millikin University, has her students meet with sixth graders once a week. Dr. Robertson is able to tell how well her students understand the lessons she is teaching them by gauging how well they are able to teach the sixth graders. At the same time, the younger students are exposed to scientific lessons, get to develop their own projects, and put together a science fair with the help of their college tutors.
