Training Faculty: a conference on service learning

Community College of Vermont - VT, Vermont
President: BARBARA MURPHY

We are presently in the process of engaging faculty at our locations in more active service learning. We have known for some time that our instructors embed service learning into curriculum on a regular basis. Our focus is to now recruit new instructors to involve them in service learning, highlight the work of current instructors and encourage instructors to promote civic responsibility amongst their peers and students.

As an example, this spring, CCV hosted the first instructor conference on service learning. This training was made possible by a mini-grant through the American Association of Community Colleges, which CCV was awarded in fall 1999. The conference was attended by over a dozen. Curriculum areas for instructors ranged from computer applications, to Dimensions of Learning, to basic skills. The event was a great success.

As we explore the Presidents Declaration of Civic Responsibility we find it helps to give focus to our educational rituals and curriculum at the College.

Navigation

As always, we are such fans of Campus Compact (both national and state chapters). Without your assistance, we could not have achieved many of the milestones we have enjoyed over the past two years. Among many other developments, these milestones include hiring a full-time Service-Learning Coordinator; forming a University-wide advisory committee that includes representatives from each school and from the community; and creating a course development series for faculty and their community partners."
