College of Journalism: Publicity as service-learning

University of Georgia - GA, Georgia

Service-learning activities can provide a number of opportunities for students to interview and learn from members of the community. The results of these interactions can, in turn, be used as publicity for service-learning. Melinda Hawley, a faculty member at the University of Georgia College of Journalism, taught her students journalism skills by asking them to interview and research service activities on campus and in the community. The students work was then put together in a magazine that was published by the university and used to spread the word about service-learning.

Higher education's role in preparing citizens and leaders for our communities, this nation, and a global society has never been more important than it is today. The focus of Utah Campus Compact is to facilitate civic engagement by our students.... The results of that effort are evident in the learning experiences that Utah faculty are designing."
