Basic English course: The written word and the lived experience

Hibbing Community and Technical College - MN, Minnesota

The experience of interacting with others is the very substance of good writing. Students at Hibbing Community and Technical College who take Basic English, a course to help them develop writing skills, find that community service provides them with a ready source of material for their writing. In fact, the time students spend tutoring children enhances the college students learning in two important ways: through tutoring, they test their own understanding and communication skills; by writing about their interactions, they become better writers.

As a president, my engagement with the community demonstrates leadership by example. Moreover, it gives our students an opportunity to experience the 'real world.' Campus Compact is the foundation and center of this engagement process. It is the organization from which we seek guidance and collaboration."
