One of the most common types of short-term service events is the fundraiser. But strong fundraising events come out of a deeper relationship than money alone. At Christmas time last year, the University of North Florida raised $125,000 for needy families in Jacksonville. The fundraising itself was part of a more meaningful service-learning project that preceded it. Students in a North Florida journalism class generated the support by spending the semester interviewing needy families and writing stories which were printed in the Florida Times-Union to solicit donations.
