Service Learning at Defiance College

Defiance College - OH, Ohio

Defiance College was one of the first colleges or universities in America to institute a comprehensive service learning requirement–a “”hands on”" experience that ties civic and social responsibility to the overall goals of education. Emphasizing the “”three C’s”" of competency, citizenship, and character, service learning will be tied to students’ majors and the school encourages students to engage in projects that fit their personal interests. The predominant idea is that through engaging students with the wider world early in their college careers, the school seeks to instill a sense of responsibility they will carry with them throughout life.

Independent evidence suggest[s] that attending an institution that is a member of Campus Compact increases the student's odds of participating in community service during college."
