Wisconsin Partnership in Service Learning

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee - WI, Wisconsin

The total grant amount awarded to UWM for this year is $23,500. Per the grant proposal funded by CNS, in the second year of the grant UWM is to share the grant with our two-year school partner in the Milwaukee Area Technical College. $11,750 will be the total available to be spent by each institution. From the $23,500 amount the CNS has designated that $1,000 is for Curriculum Development ($500 per institution), $1,00 is for a K-12 Service Learning survey ($500 per institution) and $1,500 is for Training Travel & Per Diem ($750 per institution). This leaves $20,000 of which $10,000 is to be allocated to our two-year partner the Milwaukee Area Technical College. A expense budget for the $10,000 that will be sub-granted to MATC by UWM will be attached to this plan when it is received from MATC. In year two of the grant, UWM will continue to use portions of its $10,000 to fund training and workshop opportunities for faculty on the campus. Thee training opportunities will expose the faculty to Service Learning and ways that they can bring it into their curriculum. ($1,500 is allocated for 98-99). In addition to the amount allocated for training, $500 will be used to buy books and subscriptions that faculty can use in the research and development of ways to infuse Service Learning into their courses. UWM will use $8,000 to help fund a graduate student who will teach a course in the School of Education Service Learning & Community Leadership. This course will be offered for the first time in Semester II, 1998-99. The objectives of the course are to train and expose students to leadership development skills and provide them with an opportunity to use or observe these skills in Service Learning placement experiences.
