Since the University of Scranton incorporated service-learning into the nursing curriculum in 1995, more than 500 nursing students have given more than 7,000 hours of service to the community. Students spend time in one of a range of agencies that can provide them with greater insight into public health issues, from the American Red Cross to long-term care facilities to a hospice program. Reflecting on their experiences, students have remarked on how their clients in the community have given them knowledge that no teacher can teach me.
