Student Leadership for Campus Service Efforts

University of California at Berkeley - CA, California
Contact Person:

The Cal Corps Public Service Center, UC Berkeley’s office for community service and student leadership programming, operates on a student leadership model. Harnessing a history of student involvement, all Cal Corps programs are led by students. The students service as liaisons with campus and community agencies, oversee volunteer activities, run educational outreach initiatives, teach service-learning courses, and advise the campus community. All student leaders at Cal Corps participate in a weekly seminar sponsored by the Department of City & Regional Planning that focuses on social issues and leadership skill development. All positions are eligible for academic credit and receive AmeriCorps educational awards through the Bonner Foundation and California Campus Compact.

The Swearer Award has provided me with such an incredible venue for advocacy. At Penn, I've had the chance to speak to faculty, students, and alumni who are interested more than ever in supporting the civic mission of higher education."

-Mei Elansary, University of Pennsylvania, recipient of Campus Compact's Swearer Student Humanitarian Award
