In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, hundreds of thousands of students in the Gulf Coast region are unable to attend their schools, colleges and universities. As many as 375,000 grade school students have been left without a school to go to and 100,000 college and university students have been displaced. The New Hampshire College and University Council (NHCUC) and Campus Compact for New Hampshire (CCNH) are pleased to announce that faculty, staff and students at New Hampshire colleges and universities have been actively participating in relief efforts and many more are now contributing to the restoration of teaching and learning to members of these communities as well as helping to develop a semblance of normal life. Our collective efforts seem small in the wake of this natural disaster. But Colorado Campus Compact member institutions mobilized to reach out to victims of Hurricane Katrina in a variety of ways. The state's Lowry Campus dorms were quickly opened to house victims of Katrina, while culinary students from the Johnson & Wales Denver campus prepared over 500 meals. Community College of Aurora is providing ESL classes for Katrina residents at Lowry and helping with appropriate student placement with the Aurora public schools. Regis University is able to offer students from the two Jesuit sister schools in New Orleans a somewhat seamless transition. University of Colorado at Boulder is working with over 150 displaced students, who had applied to CU Boulder. CU is working with these students one on one to ensure they won't miss a full semester, before returning to their home school. Student, faculty and staff fundraising campaigns, food and clothing drives, as well as blood drives are occurring on every campus with the Red Cross and Bonfils. Rural campuses are working with their local Rotary Clubs to raise money for rebuilding efforts. Centers for Service Learning are planning service trips to support future rebuilding efforts. AmeriCorps, VISTA and former Peace Corps members are redirecting their service to the Red Cross and supporting the Crisis Corps efforts.
Academic examples of relief efforts include - offering a relaxation of admission and other academic policies to accommodate displaced students (including waiving out-of-state fees, in-state fees in special circumstances, deferring financial aid if fees were paid, residency policies, etc.), offering short-term courses since most institutions have started the fall semester, offering vacant dormitory space (for students and others), displaced faculty outreach. Illinois Campus Compact Colleges and Universities Respond to Student Needs After Hurricane Katrina:
Hurricane Katrina has indeed challenged higher education to reach out and work together for the common good. With over 30 colleges and universities damaged and between 75,000 and 100,000 students displaced, all across the country Presidents have been stepping up to announce how their institutions will come to the aid of students. Illinois Campus Compact Executive Director, Kathy Engelken, checked in with the University and College Presidents about their campus responses. “We are proud members of Campus Compact, a national organization of colleges and universities that are involved in civic engagement efforts,” said Paul Pribbenow, President of Rockford College and Co Chair of Illinois Campus Compact Presidents Board. Presidents described heartfelt responses by their campuses to assist and relocate students from the Gulf States campuses devastated by the hurricane. They are opening their campus doors wide to embrace those students who wish to continue their education. Click here to download a document with details on efforts of the campuses listed below 152K.

All 26 North Carolina Campus Compact member campuses have response plans under development. In an effort to stimulate creative ideas and share the collective impact of members, they have created a webpage that provides links to the planned responses of each campus. They have been clearly told that, at this point, there is no capability to handle any volunteers, therefore efforts should be concentrated on planning spring break trips and other volunteer responses as the needs are defined.
