Director of Service Learning, St. Mary

Consistent with the University’s mission and strategic plan, the Director of Service Learning provides leadership in developing and managing community partnerships, curricular and co-curricular service learning initiatives and civic engagement activities, involving students, faculty, and staff.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • the development, supervision and management of the Service Learning Center; the supervision of community partnerships and placements;
  • the supervision of student, graduate student and professional staff;
  • the leadership and direction in policy development and annual goals and objectives;
  • the assessment of programs, services, and outcomes; the collaboration with faculty in the development and evaluation of curricular service-learning;
  • the development and management of operational and grant funding;
  • the collaboration on research related to civic engagement, service learning, and student development;
  • helping to educate the university community about service-learning concepts and methodology;
  • the leadership in developing and maintaining an environment that is consistent with the spirit and intent of the university mission statement.

Much of my work in service-learning and community engagement has come as a result of the many excellent resources and materials generated by Campus Compact. When I first became the Founding Director of CSUSB's CUP [Community-University Partnership Institute], I relied almost exclusively on the resources of Campus Compact in designing, planning, and implementing our actions."
