The Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University supports active community participation as a central part of a liberal education. While the Center's work reflects many perspectives, it is grounded in a community development model of respect, cooperation and partnership. The Swearer Center for Public service is responsible for the oversight of public service programs within the context of Brown's open curriculum. The Director provides leadership, administrative management, and assessment and works closely with faculty, academic departments, and Rhode Island social service and non-profit agencies to support and develop programming. The Director of the Swearer Center must demonstrate a commitment to the ideals of liberal education, diversity and cross-cultural understanding and must believe in the value of a student-centered learning environment.

Director of the Swearer Center for Public Service, Associate Dean of the College, Brown University, Providence, RI
Much of my work in service-learning and community engagement has come as a result of the many excellent resources and materials generated by Campus Compact. When I first became the Founding Director of CSUSB's CUP [Community-University Partnership Institute], I relied almost exclusively on the resources of Campus Compact in designing, planning, and implementing our actions.
