National Service Agency Announces $2 Million To Engage Youth in Summer of Service

Four thousand middle school students will participate in service-learning projects this summer, funded by the 2010 Summer of Service grants from Learn and Serve America, a national service program administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The agency awarded grants totaling $2 million to 17 nonprofits, universities and schools to engage at-risk youth in grades 6 through 9 in innovative service projects that address environmental and disaster preparedness issues.

Scheduled eSPAN/eGrants and My AmeriCorps Portal Outage: Saturday, March 13, 2010 Between 03.00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m.

On Saturday, March 13, we will be undertaking production system upgrades between the hours of 3.00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m. The scheduled hardware and software upgrades will improve the overall availability of the application environment in the future. In particular, we are installing a hardware load balancer which will automatically allocate workstation based user requests to an active front end application server. This upgrade will result in better handling of user activity/connectivity should one of the application servers fail at any time.

Rhode Island Campus Compact Welcomes New AmeriCorps*VISTA Leaders

RICC is please to announce that Lizzie Lydon and Kristin Read have joined the staff as of July 2009 as its new AmeriCorps*VISTA Leaders. Both Lizzie and Kristin completed a previous year of service as AmeriCorps*VISTA members in the RICC program last year. Lizzie Lydon, a Providence College alumni, served at PC last year. Kristin Read, a Wheelock College alumni, served at Roger Williams University last year. Lizzie will be based at the RICC office full-time and Kristin will be be the campus-based VISTA Leader splitting her time at RICC and Roger Williams University. Welcome to Lizzie and Kristin!

Partnerships for Success: College and PK-12 Activities and Opportunities Across Rhode Island

In January of 2007, Governor Carcieri's State of the State address highlighted the need for Improvement in public education. The governor requested the assistance of the state's higher eleven higher education instutitions in this endeavor. A two-part survey was sent to representatives at all eleven postsecondary institutions. The survey collected information about the overall scope of each institution's partnerships with PK-12 schools and districts, and also asked the institutions to identify the five partnerships that had the greatest impact, were the most innovative and were the most replicable. In April a preliminary report was presented to the Governor and community members, with a final report presented to the Governor's PK-16 Counil in June 2008.
