Scholarships for Service (SFS) is an AmeriCorps Education Award Only program that engages college students committed to service who serve a minimum of 300 hours in exchange for a $1000 Education Award. SFS is administered by Rhode Island Campus Compact, through generous financial support from the RI Service Alliance, and involves institutions of higher education throughout the state. Member campuses in Rhode Island have a deep commitment to the value of service in education and to fulfilling their public trust by graduating people who are active participants in civic life. SFS runs both an Academic Year term and Summer term during the year where college students can serve their local community and annually recruits approximately 70-100 college students into service.
AmeriCorps Education Award Only programs add value (in the form of education awards) to support and encourage on-going service initiatives. SFS expands opportunities for college students to serve and brings new communities and sponsors together as partners in service. Members who successfully complete the program (by serving 300 hours and meeting general program requirements) are eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award. Education Awards can be used to repay qualified student loans, to pay all or part of the cost of attending a qualified institution of higher education, or to pay expenses incurred while participating in approved school-to-work programs.
