César E. Chávez’s Birthday
Each year Cesar Chavez’s birthday is to be celebrated as a day of community service on March 31: for information on where teachers and others can access historical data on the life of Cesar Chavez, go to the website above. This site includes a standards-based model curriculum on the history, life, and work of Cesar E. Chavez. The curriculum (while designed for grades k-12,it can be adapted for undergraduate courses) includes biographies, pictures, audio clips, video clips, and other resources designed to help teachers prepare lessons for this state holiday. In addition to the model curriculum and resources for teachers, the site also includes: resources for the public, research center, and Cesar Chavez biographies in various languages (including English, Vietnamese, Cnatonese, Hmong, and Tagalog).

International Conference on Civic Engagement and Service Learning: “Universities, Students and Community”
Galway, Ireland, June 23 – 24, 2005
This conference will address the civic mission of higher education, focussing on the links between universities, students and the wider society. It will explore issues such as embedding service learning activity in academic programmes, civic education, voluntarism and participative democracy, as well as tackling practical issues of implementation, curriculum design and assessment.

Using the Past to Shape the Future: Addressing Civic Issues at Historic Sites, Museums, and Cultural Centers
November 18-19, 2004, University of Illinois at Chicago
Sponsored by: Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, Center for Cultural Understanding and Change, The Field Museum Lower East Side Tenement Museum
“Using the Past” will present successful models of civic dialogue at museums, historic sites, and cultural centers. Participants will learn how their institutions can help individuals and communities address the issues most central to their lives today.

This project is funded through the Corporation for National and Community Service, Learn and Serve America — Higher Education.
